Description

The B&K Precision 2707B digital multimeter (also known as a multitester) is a true RMS, manual-ranging meter for measuring current, voltage, resistance, capacitance, and frequency, and performing diode, logic, continuity, and transistor common-emitter gain (hFE) tests in electrical applications. An audible continuity sensor confirms a circuit conducts electricity, and a diode test detects proper functioning of a circuit's diodes. The LCD is backlit for readability in low light. It displays the present measurement or the highest or lowest reading in a session, for tracking sudden changes in readings. The relative mode stores a reading in memory to use as a zero point for subsequent readings so that multiple readings can be compared. An alarm sounds when the test leads are connected to the wrong jack for the measurement being taken. A low-battery indicator signals when the meter's batteries need to be replaced. A magnetic strap is included for hanging the meter from a metal door or surface for hands-free use. This true RMS (root mean square) meter provides accurate readings when measuring linear loads, such as standard induction motors and incandescent lights, where the current or voltage has an undistorted waveform, or nonlinear loads, such as electronic devices or motors, where the current or voltage has a distorted waveform. It is a manual-ranging meter that requires the operator to choose the appropriate operating range for the property being measured. The LCD has a 2,000-count resolution, meaning it can display up to 1,999 units (3-1/2 digits) before the operating range needs to be changed. It meets International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) safety standard 61010 and is certified for Category II installations up to 1000V, which covers large household appliances and devices connected to a fixed power supply (such as refrigerators and air conditioners), Category III installations up to 600V, which covers items used with enclosed building circuit installations (such as service panel parts, branch circuits, and fixed installations that are connected directly to a building's AC power supply), and Pollution Degree 2 for indoor use. The meter includes a set of detachable test leads, a spare fuse, a 9V battery, a magnetic hanger, and instructions.SpecificationsMaximum alternating current (AC) input10 ampMaximum direct current (DC) input10 ampMaximum AC voltage input750VMaximum DC voltage input1000VMaximum resistance detected2,000 megaohmsMaximum capacitance20 microfaradsMaximum frequency range20 MHzOther testsDiode, hFE transistor, logic, and continuityPower supply9V battery (one, installed)Safety ratingsEuropean Conformity (CE); International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) safety standard 61010-1; European Union EMC (EN) EN61326WeightApproximately 10oz./285g (including battery and hanger)Dimensions165 x 78 x 42.5mm/6.5 x 3.1 x 1.7 inches (H x W x D)H is height, the vertical distance from the lowest to highest point; W is width, the horizontal distance from left to right; D is depth, the horizontal distance from front to back.Multimeters are electrical test meters that measure multiple properties of an electrical circuit, such as current, voltage, resistance, capacitance, and continuity. Available in handheld or benchtop models, multimeters diagnose electrical problems in electrical equipment, wiring, and power supplies. A variety of probes, clamps, and leads can be used to connect the meter to a circuit or device. Multimeters display information either in analog or digital form. Factors that influence meter choice include the electrical properties to be measured, the anticipated range of results, and the desired level of protection against transient voltage. Safety ratings are based on International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standards for low-voltage test equipment. IEC 61010 delineates four overvoltage installation categories. In general, a meter with a category IV rating will provide more protection against transient voltages than a meter with a lower category rating.B&K Precision manufactures test and measurement instruments for research and development, production-line testing, and electronic field service applications. The company, founded in 1951, is headquartered in Yorba Linda, CA. It meets International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standard 9001:2008 and is compliant with Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) and waste electronic and electrical equipment (WEEE) directives. Every electronics magazine and test bench blog that's reviewed this successor to the venerable 2704B have uniformly given it 5 stars and the top rating for meters under $100. If you came here shopping via the key word "multimeter" you should know this is a meter for measuring PRINTED CIRCUIT BOARDS, not just common household electrical applications!Charles Platt, possibly the best practical author on electronics for hobbyists, has recommended the 04 for years, because in addition to all the usual PCB functions, it can also measure capacitance (Farads). See Make: Electronics (Learning by Discovery) (p. 5).In that same section, Platt argues for a MANUAL meter (like this one) over the autorangers, because of the little bit of extra time it can take for the algorithm to sort out the range from each measurement. This really comes down to what you're used to in my opinion, and BK makes an excellent line of autos on this platform for a little extra. There is NO comparison with this and other manual meters, including because this one measures:* True RMS* Up to 10 A (AC & DC)* DC voltage to 1000 V* AC voltage to 750 V* Resistance to 2000 Mohm* Capacitance to 20 uF* Continuity test* Diode test* Logic test* hFE Transistor testOlder manual meters couldn't even handle transistors, but luckily those days are gone. The construction is sturdy, and you'll be pleased with this whether you're a hobbyist or a pro. I'm a circuit tester at payroy dot com, and we have these integrated in our workstations along with very expensive bigger brothers, oscilloscopes, etc. and this gets the heaviest use of all of them! Yes, we have autorangers too, but a lot depends on what you're used to, and control freaks like me like the ability to select what I'm looking for, and if I blow a range, so what, I get an error and move to the next click! (It happens ;=().As an aside, if you graduated from Platt's book, the next step for you might be the incredible: Practical Electronics for Inventors, Third Edition. For example, if you're analyzing sinusoidal circuits with complex impedances, the book (p. 165) shows you how to avoid a whole bunch of differential equations and complex numbers by treating and measuring the capacitors and inductors like a simpler series of resistors. This is due to phase shifts in all sinusoidal circuits. This book IS filled with complex calculus, however, and is not only for the hobbyist, but serious, patenting inventors as well. Along with Platt it will teach you HOW to use this meter and WHY it does what it does with circuit components.Library Picks reviews only for the benefit of Amazon shoppers and has nothing to do with Amazon, the authors, manufacturers or publishers of the items we review.
